Just some reminders for pet owners on the Supply & Brunswick County By-laws and Ordinances:

You must pick up your dog's poop in Supply, NC, as the town is located in Brunswick County, North Carolina, where local governments have the authority to enforce ordinances requiring pet waste removal. You are responsible for cleaning up after your dog on any property other than your own to prevent public health issues and environmental pollution. 

Why you need to pick up after your dog:

Environmental Protection: Uncollected dog waste contains nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus that can pollute local waterways, leading to harmful algal blooms that kill fish and other aquatic life. 

Public Health: Dog feces can carry pathogens and bacteria that pose risks to human health. 

Community Cleanliness: Picking up dog waste keeps public spaces and neighborhoods clean, attractive, and enjoyable for everyone. 

What to do:

Bring a bag: Always carry a means to properly remove and dispose of feces, such as a plastic bag or container, when you take your dog out. 

Clean up immediately: Pick up your dog's waste from any public or private property outside of your own. 

Dispose of it properly: Place the bagged waste in a trash receptacle. 

Report violations (if applicable): If you know the owner, you can report them to local animal control if you observe them failing to clean up after their dog.

ALLOWING ANIMALS RUNNING AT LARGE PROHIBITED:

N.C.G.S. 14 – 4 AND BRUNSWICK COUNTY ORDINANCE ARTICLE IV SECTION 3 STATES: The owner of an animal shall keep the animal on his property or under restraint at all times. Any animal that has been reported as being off of the owner’s property, or has previously caused injury to a person or animal, or has displayed vicious tendency or has been a public nuisance, must be restrained by a leash, chain, fence, or enclosure by the owner even when on the owner’s property.

VACCINATIONS ARE REQUIRED:

N.C.G.S. 130 A – 185 AND BRUNSWICK COUNTY ORDINANCE ARTICLE II SECTION 2A STATES: The owner of every dog and cat shall have the animal vaccinated against rabies at four (4) months of age, again at sixteen (16) months of age and then every three (3) years by a licensed veterinarian.

WEARING RABIES TAGS REQUIRED:

N.C.G.S. 130 A – 190 & BRUNSWICK COUNTY ORDINANCE ARTICLE II SECTION 2B STATES: the owner shall make sure that the dog or cat wears the rabies tags at all times.

ANIMALS AS A PUBLIC NUISANCE PROHIBITED:

N.C.G.S. 14 – 4 AND BRUNSWICK COUNTY ORDINANCE ARTICLE V AND VI STATES: Any of the following acts by animals may be considered a public nuisance:

Is at large off of the premises of its owner.

Gets into or turns over garbage pails.

Chases, snaps at, attacks or otherwise molests pedestrians, bicyclists, motor vehicle passengers, or farm stock or domestic animals.

Damages gardens or other foliage or other real property.

Habitually or continuously loiters on school grounds or public parks or recreation areas.

Is maintained in an unsanitary condition so as to be offensive to sight or smell.

Is diseased and dangerous to the health of the public.

Is not confined in a secure building or enclosure when “in heat”.

(Cats) walking on and sleeping on the automobiles of another.

Is a dangerous animal as defined under Brunswick County Ordinance Article VIII.

ANIMAL CRUELTY PROHIBITED:

N.C.G.S. 14 – 360 AND BRUNSWICK COUNTY ORDINANCE ARTICLE III STATES: The following acts are prima facie evidence of animal cruelty:

A collar, rope or chain embedded in and causing injury to an animal’s neck.

Dogs and cats left out in the rain, snow, extreme heat or cold without shelter.

Animals that have not been fed or watered adequately.

Intentionally allowing animals to fight.

Animals living in unsanitary or crowded conditions.

Failure or refusal to obtain medical treatment for animals.
